Hello and welcome

Welcome to my blog, where I will endeavour to let you know what is happening at Neil Newitt Photography and what is coming up in Clunes, the historic gold town in Victoria, Australia where I live and run my photography gallery.

For this first post, let my tell you a bit about myself.

I am a photojournalist with more than 25 years experience. Raised on the Darling Downs in Queensland, I am now based in Clunes, in the Central Goldfields of Victoria, Australia. As a former photographer for The Age in Melbourne, I covered general news and features photography, including four years as Pictorial Editor (News).

I now shoot features and photographic essays for clients around Australia. My work has appeared in numerous publications including music journals and rural publications.

Over the years I have travelled extensively in Australia capturing unique images of rural and remote life.  My photography documents scenes of inland Australia, particularly Victoria and New South Wales. This work differs from traditional landscapes as it features the presence of man. Whether it’s in the architecture of the towns or homesteads, or captured in photographs of faded signs, you often get glimpses of “what’s gone before”, a sense of other people’s lives. My photograph of drought conditions near Wycheproof, Victoria (above) was a finalist  in the 2005 Walkley Awards.

I am also a guest lecturer in Photojournalism and regularly addresses groups on the issues of press photography. The Neil Newitt Photography gallery is located at 55 Fraser Street, Clunes, Australia.
